How to Make a Face Sculpture Using a Mold

Below is one way on how to make a face sculpture using a mold.

Step 1 – Push small pieces of clay into the face mold. My local ceramics shop allowed me to borrow this face mold.

Step 2 – Smooth clay over to ensure all the clay pieces have joined in the face mold.

Step 3 – Turn mold over and gently release the clay face from the mold. Smooth the face with a little water to cover all of the cracks.

Step 4 – I hadn’t really planned what to do with the face so I thought I would make a simple slab pot and apply the face to it. So for this I rolled out a slab of clay and applied the face to the slab and joined with slip etc.

Step 5 – The face is now joined to the clay slab. Let it sit a little to firm up before making the slab pot. Roll out more slabs of clay for the pot and let firm.

Step 6 – Construct the slab pot using coils to strengthen and join the slabs of clay.

Step 7 – Create a hole in the back of the face otherwise the pot will probably explode in the kiln.

Step 8 – I cropped the top of the slab pot by cutting around the hair.
