Sgraffito Mug

I have just learnt about the Sgraffito technique. It’s pretty cool.  The technique includes covering your pot in a colour glaze, and then if you wait until the pot is dry you can “scratch” out a pattern/picture that reveals the colour beneath.  The term comes from the Italian word sgraffire meaning (literally) “to scratch”.

In this case… I covered the mug with a black underglaze > scratched out the pattern > 1st firing > apply a clear glaze >2nd firing.

I like it because you get a strong contrast between the black and white and its has texture from the scratches.
